Louise Bretland-Treharne

Louise Bretland-Treharne’s story is about more than clinical diagnosis, hospital appointments, mobility aids and disability. “My story is about human experience, overcoming adversity with calm resilience and fighting on, armed with a dose of determination and a handful of humour.

I was broken, exhausted and lost. As a result of prescribed drugs and ECT treatment I was cruelly robbed of mind, spirit and soul. I lost all hope and became a tortured human being. I am privileged to have survived.

Fortunately, I possess the necessary courage to overcome one obstacle after another. I have learned to believe in myself again, claim my right to be who I am and invite readers to share my journey.”

Louise has a background in general nursing, a specialist qualification in neuroscience nursing and some experience in mental health nursing. She also trained as a classical singer in her twenties. She lives with a combination of complex neurological conditions and her book ‘Warm Tears in the Cold’ gives an account of her life, the emergence of various neurological conditions and the grace with which she faces these increasingly life-limiting challenges.
